Que Sera Sera

October 5th, 2009

I have discussed in the past Thais don’t look ahead in life, just letting it come to them one day at a time.  While some might wish to debate this, it’s a cultural thing rooted in their Buddhist belief system.

For years I’ve been shopping at the Villa Market, an up scale grocery store chain here in Bangkok that offers a good selection of western products.  As with many stores of this type, there’s always some music playing in the background.   In most places you can expect to hear Thai music, but Villa plays a selection done in English.  They are all remakes of classic easy listening songs.

Thus, most times I’m in the store I get the pleasure of listening to an old Doris Day song, Que Sera Sera.  I don’t mind, as it’s been a favorite of mine going all the way back to my childhood years.  I never gave it much thought until a few days ago when I turned on the TV and caught a group of children, all with physical disabilities, singing this Doris Day classic.  It was a very moving piece with occasional cuts to shots of the audience which consisted of teary eyed parents.

Then it suddenly dawned on me, this song is probably very popular in Thailand, because it epitomizes the Thai philosophy of life.

Que sera, sera
Whatever will be, will be
The future’s not ours to see
Que sera, sera
What will be, will be

Gay Relationship Power Struggles

October 2nd, 2009

Awhile back I was out for dinner and a bottle of whiskey with a boy that had come up to visit me from Pattaya.  Leo was in Korat visiting family, on the heels of yet another power play in the relationship.  This had resulted in some tension between us that was left unresolved.

Princess joined us for the evening, and the subject of Leo once again trying to make a power move came up.  During our discussion of the situation I asked the boys if this was a common problem in Thai/Thai gay relationships, something I’ve long suspected.

Princess said that some Thai/Thai relationships are equal, but the vast majority are not.  He said it is probably the number one reason for these relationships failing, as neither will give into the other.  Princess added the only time it’s not an issue is when one clearly supports the other.  In these cases the one providing support is always given the position of power.
