Eating With Thai Boys

October 24th, 2007

Do not assume a Thai boy will be impressed by the ambiance of a fancy restaurant. What truly impresses a boy is how good the food is, in accordance with his standard. Nearly all of the boys in Bangkok, and Pattaya are transplants from other regions of Thailand and grew up eating foods prepared a specific way common to their region. An upscale Bangkok restaurant may serve great food, but if it ain’t like home cooking, the boy may not be impressed. Most boys won’t say anything unless asked, and then may be reluctant to give a brutally honest assessment. If you do solicit an opinion, don’t be surprised when you hear something like, “This not like we make my home” or “My mother make more better”.

If you want to impress a boy, first find out what restaurants are really good at cooking for specific regions. Then match the boy with the place that cooks food he is use to eating. Best I can tell this is most important with boys from Isan (North East) and those from the South. An alternative is to let the boy recommend a good place. Then you know he will be happy.

On a different note, it is probably a good idea to be sensitive about your neighborhood eateries gaining a good perspective on how many guys you are seeing. I’ll just leave it at that. Alternatively, some of the boys care what people think, particularly the money boys. If a boy declines your invitation to lunch or dinner, it could be because he’s just not hungry. It could also be he wants to use some discretion. A better option might be to send him out alone for some take away (take out) food, and dine in the privacy of your home.

This apprehension, on the part of some boys, is not limited to restaurants. I’ve had guys politely tell me they will wait outside while I go into a 7 Eleven. One actually told me he would wait on the other side of the street.
