Entertaining The Boys

February 10th, 2009

I’ve already talked about not boring your boy by taking him to a bar with no other Thai to visit with.  Up until recently I’ve felt this was enough to keep the boys entertained, but I’m now discovering that socializing in bars associated with the sex trade is not at the top of their list.  Given a choice between a free night on the town and sitting at home, the boys will accompany you to any venue of your choosing, even if there are places they’d much rather be.

That said, there are a couple of things most boys do enjoy in these areas - cabaret and sex shows.  Although, I think if one took a boy to the sex shows every time the novelty of it would quickly wear off. They also tend to enjoy the special parties that places like Balcony Pub and Telephone Bar host throughout the year.  Dinner at one of the Soi 4 bars is welcomed too, provided its Thai food.

In my experience, and I’m sure there are exceptions, boys that truly enjoy spending the evening at bars in Silom Soi 4 are really most interested in cruising other farang.  I’d venture to say more phone numbers get discreetly exchanged in the toilets of those two big bars than any other place in town.  I’ve lost count of the times boys report being hit on in the bathroom by farang, many who are already with another boy.  I think it’s kind of stupid for farang to do this sort of thing.   Odds are the only ones they’ll have success with are the money boys, and what they end up with is a boy that doesn’t respect them.  Hardly worth it, if you ask me.

Any way, what I have learned is to mix it up a bit by taking the boys other places they enjoy.  For a night of drinking, the Thai 4 Thai clubs are always a big hit with the boys.  I’m no different than them in wanting to have someone to visit with, so I try and get a farang friend to join us.  An evening at one of the Isan dance clubs is also very popular with the Isan boys, and perhaps some of the others.  The boys know where the clubs are, so all you have to do is ask them to be the guide.  Take a group, get a bottle of whiskey, and you’ll have the time of your life.  Most of the male performers at these places are gay, and the crowd is usually mixed.

Of course, there are many other things to do that don’t involve drinking.  Truth be known, consumption of alcohol is not at the top of most boys’ fun seeking list of things to do.  Eating out is always a favorite for them, but not some fancy farang place.  These guys are more interested in how good the food is.  For the Isan boys, there’s a cluster of street food restaurants to the right of central world that earns two thumbs up.  We are talking plastic stools and metal folding tables on the sidewalk, with toilet paper for napkins, but the food is to die for.

They also love the Thai BBQ places.  These are all you can eat buffets where you cook the food at your table.  I’m not talking about restaurants you see in the malls with electric cookers on the tables.  The real Thai BBQ places are open-air venues with only a roof to keep out the rain.  Cooking is done with charcoal grills that have a ring of water around the outside.  Some items cook on the grill and others, like noodles and vegetables, boil in the water.  Most places run about 100 baht a person.

You might be surprised to learn most boys have never been on a river before, so taking a river taxi up stream (8 baht) to a restaurant can be a real treat.  A very popular Thai BBQ place is located on the river (Thonburi side) near the Rama VIII Bridge. You can grab a river taxi at Saphan Tasksin BTS station before 7:30 pm and take it to a docking point within short walking distance of the restaurant.

If you are looking for a day time outing, there’s a water taxi tour (near Grand Palace) that takes you to three wats along the river for 100 baht.  The taxi service runs in a circuit all day, so when ready to move on to another wat you just grab the next boat, arriving every 20 minutes.  It depends on the boy, but a lot of them like touring the temples around town, and not just the tourist attractions.  The last wat on this tour has a very famous monk, so the boys like to go there and make merit.

All the boys love going to the movies, but some times you should let them pick a Thai movie and suffer yourself through the subtitles.  Avoid comedies as the humor often does not translate well.  On the subject of movies, there’s a real good chance the boy you are with has never been to an Imax theater.  Paragon has 5 Imax theaters, some with 3D.

Ever thought about taking your boy for a foot massage?  It’s a luxury he can’t afford, and a special treat he’s sure to enjoy.

Dusit Zoo

For a great afternoon outing, spend a day at the Bangkok Zoo.  Its not world class, but the boys absolutely love looking at all the animals.  Hippopotamus, tiger and giraffe seem to be the favorites.  It’s also an ideal place to take lots of pictures of your adorable little companion.  There is a Thai restaurant on the lake that’s nice, but the food is over priced and not that good.  Also right on the lake is a KFC with outdoor seating.  If not totally exhausted from walking the grounds, there are paddle boats for rent.

Consider taking your boy to a Thai 4 Thai sauna, but not just any place, and not for sex.  Chakran Sauna, within walking distance of the Ari BTS station, is a luxurious place frequented mostly by HiSo Chinese Thai.  They probably won’t give you or your boy the time of day, so it’s kind of like having the place to yourself with all these ghosts in towels wandering by.  Chances are you won’t see any sex going on if you just take in the wet areas, although it’s not uncommon to hear a little slurping going on in a secluded nook of the steam room.  There’s also a nice restaurant and pool side bar to enjoy.  The boy may never want to go back again, but will most likely be happy to have had the experience.  Make sure he’s over 20 or you could get rejected at the door if it’s a busy night.

Chakran Sauna

I could go on with this list, and I’m sure others can add to it, as well.  The point is don’t be selfish and expect your boy to only do the things you enjoy.  Of course, if you consider your boy to be nothing more than a hired sex servant, you’re right on track.  The boy will never say anything to you, and if asked what he wants to do his answer will almost always be “up to you.”  Simply tell the boy YOU want to do these other things, and he will accommodate.  Trust me when I say the boy is probably all a glow inside knowing he’s going to do something other than sit at a bar and watch the rent boys and tourists walk by.

    Right on RQ. :)
You could also add a ferry ride up to Nonthaburi.
A night out at Siam Niramit (wow, just like my house family in xxxx)
I have walked past the tables near Central World … I will have to give them a try. Though I am always cautions with street vendors. Giardia is NOT a good feeling :)
A visit to the area and temple and palaces around Sanam Luang - take a camera.
The cabaret at the Asia Hotel is quite good, but overpriced for the length of the show, but a good experience.
Go to a swimming pool. Most guys just lurve time in the water.
My guy likes Telephone for dinner and maybe one drink afterwards, but otherwise isn’t too fussed.
RQ, if you choose to extend this write-up it could be one of those seminal events. :)

    Yraen,

I’m hoping others will contribute ideas, particularly those not found in the tourist guides. Those special things to do that only the locals know about.

I was sitting with my Thai boy at Balcony Pub and he was looking quite bored. It was too early to go dance, so I asked him what he wanted to do. After a few minutes, his face lit up, and he said, “Let’s do bowling!” After confirming that he really meant bowling with pins, balls, lanes, and all that, I agreed and he quickly negotiated a fare with a taxi-meter uptown to the MBK Center, where on the 7th floor there is an awesome bowling alley: full bar, DJ music, disco lights, glow in the dark balls, snack menu. We had a blast. He beat the socks off of me, too. It was a real treat for him, probably a luxury he didn’t often get to enjoy. We have some cute pictures in our bowling shoes, too. I posted a link here if you’re interested.

My boi loves bowling too. Other things he likes is movies, go carting, gathering his friends and some family and having a picnic at locations we’d never find, like next to a lake. Of course he likes karoke, but only at special places that are open like 24/7 in back alleys that we’d never find. Of course he needs to have a friend or two, so he can talk, and boy do they love to talk and giggle. I love to see him so happy.
