No Refunds

December 12th, 2006

It is important to understand when you buy something in Thailand there are no refunds. You cannot take something back for a refund, because you do not like it. Once you buy it, you own it.

If you buy something and it does not work, you may be able to exchange it for the same item. However, the store may ask you to contact the manufacturer for warrantee service. I have asked for, and received, an exchange twice - once from a large department store, and the other from a small shop.

All stores will let you test the product before taking it home. Both times I exchanged a product it could not be tested in the store. This may have a lot to do with why I was given the exchange.

You cannot ask for your money back, or refuse to pay the check, if you are unhappy with the food you ordered in a restaurant. In some cases the restaurant may agree to substitute your order, but I would not count on it. The only exception MAY be with expensive restaurants in five star hotels.

The bottom line is, do not expect to ever get your money back, under any circumstance. In the unlikely event you are successful in receiving a refund, it will only be accomplished through polite and courteous discussion. Angry demands from an unsatisfied customer will fall on deaf ears in Thailand. This sort of conduct is totally unacceptable in Thai culture.
