Take Off Your Shoes

November 11th, 2006

In most, if not all, Asian cultures, you are expected to take your shoes off before, or just after, entering someone’s home. This also holds true in other situations, such as entering a Buddhist temple.

Sox are apparently optional. Thais often do not wear sox, even with shoes, but they usually take them off, if they are. I’ve not asked yet, but my guess is this is more about keeping their sox clean.

Example

If a home wishes the shoes to come of before entering, you will see other shoes outside the door. Otherwise, you can assume it is acceptable to remove your shoes just after entering the home.
