The Electric Bill

January 22nd, 2007

Something I learned the hard way is electricity is billed at different rates in Thailand. I don’t know the entire range of rates that are charged here. What I can tell you is I pay 15 Baht per unit, and a friend of mine pays 2. This can really add up, particularly if you run the A/C all the time. At 15 Baht per unit, my electric bill ends up being almost as high as my rent - about $200 US! At 2 Baht per unit the bill would be $25-$50 dollars a month.

So when you are shopping for an apartment, make sure to check the rates for electricity. You can also ask what that should average in monthly electric bills. They should be able to give you a high and low range - depending on how much you use the A/C.
